Notes from a close week in Social Circle
A short field note on how a small operations team used paper marks beside local charts, rather than a wall of unexplained color.
During one June close near Social Circle, the team printed the mix chart at tabloid size and wrote the two largest week-over-week moves in pencil in the margin. The pencil notes were more useful than a second dashboard page nobody opened.
They had tried a twelve-stream view the month before. People skipped to the total. Cutting to four streams — shop, contracts, repairs, and a named wholesale account — made the conversation shorter and more specific.
The local utility sat on one machine in the office. Nobody treated it as a place to store funds or keys. It held the tagged export and the chart definitions for that period.
The lesson we keep: the chart is a prompt for a sentence a person can say in the room. If the sentence is “it looks down,” the chart is still too vague.
